Community Building: thread forming circle of hands around the globe

Reading Time: | Word Count:

As I look back on a challenging year, I want to share with you something I say often to remind me to be mindful and present to all that life offers.

Gratitude is the thread that binds us. Intentional community is the thread that binds us. Each day offers us a chance to express gratitude to the relationships that keep us going, the people who make up our communities, and the spaces we co-create. Gratitude for one another fuels our collective efforts toward social justice. Let’s commit to care, support, and uplift each other as we work towards a more equitable future.

This year I am grateful for the lessons the year has taught me. I have shared the things I’ve learnt on my social media and I’d like to encourage you to go to my posts on reflections and goals, to draw on as tools to live your best life in 2025.

Community building

I’d also like to repeat the lessons I have learnt in community building, which I am sharing again in this pictorial essay. I hope you find them as useful as I do. These lessons are rooted in the values of solidarity, care, and collective liberation.

Shared vision is power

Building community starts with aligning with a common vision for the future — a world where African women, femmes and gender non-conforming people thrive in their full power. It’s about more than what we fight against; it’s about what we’re fighting for.

Embrace diverse narratives

Our strength lies in our diversity — our different histories, cultures and lived experiences. By listening deeply to each other and embracing our diverse narratives we build a stronger, more inclusive solidarity.

Accountability over perfection

In our work, accountability is key, not perfection. We make mistakes, but it is the commitment to learn, unlearn, and hold one another with care, that makes us resilient. Growth happens in the messiness.

Radical love is the foundation

Radical love is the cornerstone of Pan-African feminism. It’s the kind of love that disrupts oppression, heals wounds and sustains us in our struggles. When we love one another unconditionally, we create space for liberation to flourish.
